Pep Guardiola warns Manchester City players they must improve to win the Premier League

Pep Guardiola has warned Manchester City must improve if they want to win the Premier League in his first season.

City maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a 2-1 win over local rivals Manchester United that took them two points clear at the top of the table.

But Guardiola, who leads City into their opening Champions League group game against Borussia Monchengladbach tomorrow, said his side will need to raise their level to land the title this term.

“I want to tell the brilliant audience here and our fans that, okay, we are first place, but it will not be enough to win the Premier League,” said Guardiola.

“You have to improve to in the Premier League. Of course, we are so happy for the results, the numbers and the way we have played until now.

Guardiola is not resting on his laurels

“But it will not be enough to win the Premier League. We have to improve.

“But it is normal. All the teams have to improve, especially when the managers are new.”

Guardiola also defended City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo – brought in for former No.1 Joe Hart – whose error led to United’s goal in the win at Old Trafford.

“He is so strong, I saw the game again yesterday to realise what kind of things we did good and what kind of things we need to improve on,” said Guardiola.

Claudio Bravo of Manchester City celebrates his team’s against Manchester United

“I was convinced [by Bravo] before the game and after seeing it again it was the same.

“I’m going to tell you something – Claudio Bravo and Willy Caballero are going to play and are going to make mistakes in the future.

“They’re not going to save all the goals and opponents are going to score goals against them. I’m pretty sure about that.”
