New National Poll: Trump Surges Among Latinos, African-Americans

Even before the first speech was made, the Clinton campaign thought they had several demographics locked up: young people, women, African-Americans, the LGBTQ community and, if Marco Rubio wasn’t the Republican candidate, Latinos.

It didn’t work out that way.

Young voters flocked to Bernie, and it is unclear how many will return to actually vote for Hillary, or just stay home in November. While already-Democratic women embraced Hillary, her “first woman president” meme failed to catch on, and conservative women did not move into her camp. The LGBTQ community stayed Democrat, as expected.

But after months of strong support, something may be happening among Latino and African-American voters. And it is not good news for Hillary.

The latest Franklin Pierce University/Boston Herald poll showed by combining voters who were “very favorable” and “somewhat favorable” to Trump, he scored a positive rating from about 35 percent of Hispanics and 24 percent of African-Americans.

— 18.4 percent of Hispanics rated him “very favorable;”
— 16.4 percent of Hispanics rated him “somewhat favorable.”

Among Black voters:

— 10.5 percent rated Trump “very favorable;”
— 13.3 percent rated Trump “somewhat favorable.”

While Clinton remains strong among voters of color, and no one is claiming Trump will take the lead there, Hispanic support will help him in Florida, while African-American supporters will help him in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. In those crucial battleground states, every vote counts, and it may be that Trump is picking up a few where no one would have expected it.
