'Perfect couple' husband and wife found dead in 'suspected suicide' inside Grimsby home as heartbroken neighbours pay tribute

A husband and wife found dead inside their own home in a suspected suicide have been described as the ‘perfect couple’ by heartbroken pals.

Karen and Stephen Arnold have been named locally as the man and woman who were found lifeless in their New Waltham, Grimsby, home.

Police officers raced to the home in the early hours of yesterday morning after receiving a tip-off there may have been a death at the home.

As officers entered the modern red-brick home in a quiet cul-de-sac they discovered the bodies of a man, 55, and woman, 46.

Friends and neighbours revealed the couple to be Mr and Mrs Arnold – described by those who knew them as “lovely people” and the “perfect couple”.

Humberside Police confirmed they were following a number of lines of enquiry, and it is understood that suicide has not been ruled out.

Stunned neighbours revealed their grief at the death of the ‘lovely’ couple

A spokesman said the deaths were not suspicious and nobody else is being sought in connection.

A police cordon was put in place around the property, with crime scene investigators working at the scene for much of yesterday.

Uniformed officers guarded the front of the home, as officers carried out door-to-door enquiries in the area, while CCTV is also being viewed.

People arrived yesterday to lay flowers in memory of the couple, who are understood to have lived at their home alone with their pet dog since around 2000.

A local shop owner described how Mrs Arnold came into the shop, on the Greenlands estate, as normal on Monday morning to buy milk to take to work.

He said she was “lovely” and “appeared her normal self”.

Neighbour Lucy Constable described the Arnolds as “nice, quiet people” who she often said hello to as she walked her dogs.

She said: “I am very shocked because you just wouldn’t expect it to happen down here. It’s such a quiet street and they were a really nice couple.

“It’s very sad. It’s only a small community and we never have any trouble down here.”

Another Bude Close resident, who went to school with the woman who died, added: “I’m really upset because I knew them both quite well.

“I went to school with the lady. It’s terrible news.”

Owner of the nearby Premier Convenience Store, Arul Kulasegaram, said he had helped police with access to his CCTV images.

He said: “It’s devastating news. I’ve been here 18 months and have never seen anything like it.

“I feel upset because it is horrible news in a nice village.”

Chris Ridall paid tribute to the “perfect couple”, and told how he left work early yesterday, after becoming so upset by the news.

He said: “They were dog walkers and a lovely couple. I never thought anything like this would happen.

“I’ve lived here since 2000 and I am really saddened by it.

“I’ve come home from work early because I can’t get my head around it. I just can’t believe it.”

Relatives of the deceased are being offered support by police.
